GREENVILLE — The Green Wave wrestling program played host to Arcanum, Celina, Goshen and Clermont Northeastern at the ninth annual Greenville varsity tournament.

The inclement weather moved the Saturday start time from 9:30 a.m. until noon with the cancellation of the junior high matches.

The early season duals allowed coaches and staff to evaluate their programs progress to date.

Celina took first place followed by Goshen at second. Greenville finished third followed by Clermont Northeastern and Arcanum.

“We went 2-2 as a team. We are giving up six weight classes right now, so it’s kind of hard to win a dual match,” first-year Greenville varsity wrestling coach David Guillozet said. “Overall I was pretty happy, but we still have a lot of work to do. I expect to get a lot of work done here this week.

“Alex VanHoose wrestled really well today,” Guillozet said. “He wrestled hard and he wrestled tough.”

“All in all for us being small, I thought we did pretty we,” first-year Arcanum varsity wrestling coach Duane Byers said. “We just gave up so many classes.

“We had seven (wrestlers). They all did very well,” Byers said. “If things keep progressing, keep learning and keep getting stronger, I really look to see when we get down to the end of the year, we will have a few of those guys make it past sectionals.

“Kyle Carlisle (120) did real well winning four matches. Gayle Sanders (126) did very well, also. Caleb (Harter) won three matches, Lucas Gower had a pretty good day, too. He had four matches, and he won. Chase Gostomsky and Brad Byers had a good day, too. Chase won three matches Brad won two of his four.

“We still have room for improvement. We saw a lot of things we need to improve on,” coach Byers said. “We need to work on takedowns a little bit more, work on finishing out some of our pin moves and work on our technique a little bit more.

“We are very conditioned,” Byers added. “I think we are there as far as conditioning.”

“We have to start here and keep it going,” Byers said. “Once they see that these guys are winning with just a few numbers, it will bring some more out.”

Rounding out Guillozet’s Greenville high school coaching staff is Micah Coblentz and Kyle Cromwell.

“We have five kids for JV. They both will work with the JV,” Guillozet said. “We are pretty much a full program here.”

Mark Eldridge and Zach McCabe are coaching the junior high program for the Green Wave.

“I think they are doing a nice job,” Guillozet said of the junior high program. “I’m looking forward to the kids coming up to the high school. It looks like we have some pretty decent kids.”

“I’m looking forward to the season,” Guillozet added. “I have a good time coaching these kids. They are good kids. They work hard for me, and I expect a lot from them. We are on the way up.”
