GREENVILLE - The Greenville Kmart store located on Wagner Avenue will close to the public in mid-May.
According to the Sears Holdings Corporation Communications Office (Kmart’s parent company), the Greenville location is closing because the lease was not renewed.
“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” read a prepared statement. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.”
The store in Greenville has 61 employees who were notified of the closing early Friday.
Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. According to the the public relations office, most of the Greenville associates are part time/hourly.
In conjunction with the closing, the store will begin its liquidation sales on Feb. 23.
