TROY – The Franklin Monroe boys basketball team led wire-to-wire on Monday, defeating a quick Jefferson Broncos team 67-50 in tournament play.
“The glory goes to God,” Franklin Monroe varsity boys basketball coach Troy Myers said following the game. “We put faith in this team. We just talked before the game you either put your faith in what the world tells you to do or you put your faith in, the truth and what you are committed to.”
Franklin Monroe 6-foot 3-inch senior Trey Mong got the Jets on the board first, hitting back-to-back free throws for a lead that would hold until the final buzzer.
“His (Trey Mong) mental preparation and the way he focuses his mind before the game, that’s when he wins,” Myers said. “He generates some kind of drive inside himself.”
A Travis Feitshans stick-back, a Broncos basket and a Mong two-point goal had the Jets up 6-2 before Jefferson closed to 6-5 with a three.
The Jets clung to a one-point 9-8 lead at 3:17 in the first with the Broncos matching a Devin Fourman 3-pointer.
The Jets stepped it up a notch at both ends of the court with a 8-0 run with a Feitshans free throw, back-to-back Mong baskets in the paint and triple from sophomore Zach Hyre to lead 17-8 with 0:58 showing.
A late first period Broncos bucket had FM taking a 17-10 lead into second period play.
The Jets got their first double-digit lead of the evening with a Hyre 4-foot jumper and a 3-pointer from the baseline wrapped around a Jefferson bucket for a 22-12 FM lead with Hyre coming of the bench for eight first half points.
“If he (Hyre) gets his feet set and it’s in the air, I feel pretty good about it,” Myers said. “That’s the shot they were giving us. He was open so he shot them.”
By 3:11 on the clock the Broncos had the Jets’ lead down to 24-19 with a timeout called by FM.
Two Mong baskets around a Broncos’ bucket had the Jets back on top 28-21 at 1:19 before a Jefferson trey with 0:10 on the first half clock had the Jets lead reduced to four at 28-24.
With 0:01.5 showing Feitshans, a 6-foot 3-inch senior, struck again, nailing a basket to give the Jets a 30-24 lead at the break.
“We put the ball in the hands of the guys that needed to have it,” Myers said.
Five unanswered Jets points, three Mong free throws and a Feitshans 10-foot jumper in the lane opened an FM 11-point second half lead.
“Once we stretched the defense, you go inside one-on-one,” Myers said. “We took what was given.”
The teams played even over the final five minutes of quarter No. 3 with the Jets maintaining a 10-point margin heading to the final quarter of action, leading 45-35 with Feitshans accounting for 10 third quarter points and Mong chipping in five.
“Jefferson is a tough out. They are an unorthodox team,” Myers said. “I thought our guys grinded through all the adversity that came and really jumped on top and stayed on top. Extremely proud of everybody.”
Fifteen Jefferson fourth quarter points including two treys was no match for Franklin Monroe’s largest offensive output of the night with the Jets tossing in 22 points as five Jets scored at the charity stripe including six Feitshans throws.
FM opened up a 15-point lead at 6:44 with two Feitshans free throws, a basket and free throw for an old fashioned three-point play by Mong followed with a Mong strong move in the paint for a goal to lead 52-37.
“Trey (Mong) was scoring; he was scrapping; he was on the boards; he was up and in the press break when we needed him breaking the press,” Myers said. “When you can see him being multi-dimensional like that and helping us in various ways, it’s really tough to key on Trey. He is playing phenomenal right now.”
Down the final stretch Jefferson would see two players take a seat on the bench with five fouls while the Jets were claiming a 67-50 win to move on in tournament play. Franklin Monroe advances to play Catholic Central at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Troy.
Trey Mong led all scorers with 26 points in the contest.
