GREENVILLE - According to a handout given to employees on Thursday, the Whirlpool factory has experienced an outbreak of bed bugs.
“We want to let you know that we had an isolated incident in the health center (nurse’s station) on Monday (June 9),” read the handout. “There have been no other reports from any other areas since that time. A few bed bugs were found. There is no need to panic and this can be eliminated with minimal disruption.”
The company told employees that an exterminator had been in the building on Monday and Wednesday. As a precautionary measure, they asked all employees to remove their personal belongings from the lockers near the health center until June 23 for additional extermination.
“It is fairly commonplace to find bed bugs in public and private work places,” the handout read. “Why? Bed bugs are small and they like to hide. Anyone can carry them into our building on clothing, personal belongings and shoes.”
Employees are encouraged to speak with human resources if they have any concerns or questions or if they have bed bugs at home and need time off to take care of them. Employees were also given basic facts about bed bugs.
