20th Annual Family History Jamboree

DAYTON – This year, Centerville’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host its 20th annual Family History Jamboree, a free event attended by hundreds of genealogists from all over the state.

The Family History Jamboree is a free, all day event held on Saturday, April 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 901 E. Whipp Rd. in Centerville.

Each year, experts and beginners alike come for a day of classes focused on the different avenues of research connecting them with their family history. In the past, this event has been held in February. However, this year the Jamboree will be moved to April in favor of better weather and driving conditions for those traveling long distances.

Many exciting new classes will be offered, but the most sought after class will cover the “Freedmen’s Bureau Records,” a new database with records kept from 1865-1872, containing a wide range of information about the African American experience during slavery and freedom.

Organizing the Jamboree this year is Dana Palmer, Certified Genealogist and instructor.

“Three of the speakers are certified genealogists; at least five are speakers statewide and four have spoken nationally. Stephen McDonald, MD is a DNA expert in his field,” says Palmer.

More information on these instructors, as well as registration and class titles, can be found at www.fhj1.org.

Attendees may select up to six one-hour classes out of a list of about 20. They range from the beginner level to the more advanced topics such as “Collateral Kindred” and “Military Research.”

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Seating for this event nears capacity, so early registration is suggested.
