Business growing in Versailles

VERSAILLES – Business is looking good in Versailles, if this week’s council meeting is anything to go by. Two more lots in Bohman Industrial Park are getting closer to being used by

Council approved a Community Reinvestment Area Agreement with Darnell Investment Group LLC for one lot that is to become home to a facility for Books by the Bushel, a Versailles-based children’s book supplier for literacy programs across the country.

Council also heard the first reading of an ordinance to transfer another lot at the business park. The lot is to be used by Voisard Specialties, owned by Scott Voisard.

After considering bids received for the three remaining lots from the elementary school land, council opted to accept two bids for individual lots above the $25,000 minimum bid. A third bid was received but offered $25,000 for each lot only on the condition that all three lots be sold together. Council members decided since the lots were listed to be sold individually, they would accept the higher bids for the two lots and sell the third separately.

Council approved a request from EMS Administrator Matt Harvey to join the Central Western Fireman’s Association. Fire Chief Brian Pearson was on hand to tell council about the benefits to membership and also discuss the 86th annual CWFA Conference.

Pearson proposed having Versailles host the conference, which brings 15 to 20 fire and EMS departments together for a meeting and friendly competitions. The chief said events will likely be held at Heritage Park – except the queen contest, which will probably be held at the school, and the annual meeting, which would be held in the conference room at the fire department. Pearson noted that arrangements have not yet been finalized, and he was seeking the go-ahead from council before pursuing anything else. Council gladly granted Pearson permission to move forward with plans for the event.

The fire chief also presented council with the annual report on calls made by the department in 2015.

In other business, council:

* approved a new tree list for the village’s Shade Tree Ordinance and approved Eagle Tree Service for the right-of-way tree trimming;

* awarded a bid for the Hickory Drive Storm Sewer/Water Replacement Project, which came in around $61,000 under the engineer’s estimate;

* and mayor issued a proclamation for FFA Week.
