Commissioners seek airport tenant agreements

DARKE COUNTY — The Darke County Board of Commissioners approved a motion to issue letters terminating the occupancy of nine tenants at the Darke County Airport during its Wednesday regular session.

In the letter, the board is informing the tenants they must either “comply with all of its terms and conditions” or they must leave the premises by May 31. If the commissioners are not contacted by that date, the board will initiate eviction actions.

According to Darke County Business Administrator John Cook, the county has attempted to contact the nine since December 2014, but had not received responses or acceptance of new lease terms established by the board.

“We’ve had 85 percent compliance,” Cook said, noting that the majority of current tenants had agreed to lease agreements and insurance requirements.

According to Darke County Assistant Prosecutor Margaret Hayes, the lease agreements were enacted by the commissioners in line with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for airport operators.

Commissioner Mike Rhoades said the board had done its best to reach agreements with the nine, but felt its hands were forced by their noncompliance or unwillingness to respond to inquiries.

The board also approved a notice of award to Brumbaugh Construction in regards to the East Canal Street Reconstruction project in Ansonia, Ohio.

The project is a three-party agreement between the contractor, the Village of Ansonia and the county. Mike Henderson of Mote & Associates Engineering stated the Ansonia Village Council had given its approval to the agreement Tuesday night.

Community Development/Grants Coordinator Jeff Marshall explained that the $24,800 being released by the commissioners for the project was provided through a Community Development Block Grant.

The commissioners also signed a proclamation declaring May 2016 as “Motorcycle Awareness Month” in Darke County.

The Darke County Board of Commissioners meets at 1:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, except holidays. For more information, visit the board’s website at mydarkecounty.com/services/county-administration.
