Local author’s book focuses on his industrial experiences

GREENVILLE — Erwin Paul Zeiter has written about his 30 years of experience in industry in a book he has titled: “Creating A Productive Environment/Work Force for the Twenty-First Century.”

He said he felt a need to share what he learned with others.

“Recently, I took time to gather all of my experiences in the many jobs I held to write and publish my book,” said Zeiter.

During his career, he was a management trainee, engineering scheduler, production control supervisor, material control manager, corporate material control manager, vice president of manufacturing and general plant manager. The last 10 years of his career, he was an associate professor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

“There, I had the good fortune to teach many courses in the industrial technology department,” he said. “I was also able to control local businesses with my own firm, EZ Concepts.”

Zeiter, who attended and graduated from Hillsdale’s elementary and senior high schools in Michigan, attended Hillsdale College for two years then turned to Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1956. His master’s degree in mechanical engineering was acquired from Wayne State University in 1972.

Zeiter said he started his long-term work at Ex-Cell-O Corp. in 1956, and in January 1957, he was inducted in the “critical skills program” to the U.S. Army Reserves and served six months active duty in the infantry at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

He was married to Sally Lee Hole in October 1959 and they settled in Detroit.

The author was born in Hillsdale in a family composed of parents, three brothers and three sisters.

“We were really shocked when my oldest brother, who was a navigator on a B-1 in the Air Force, was killed in a plane crash,” he said. “My approaches to earning money in my early life started at the age of 10. My younger brother and I bagged and sold corn cobs from the local farm business and sold to the people up and down our street. We also saved papers and other metals during World War II for the war effort. I delivered newspapers for the Hillsdale Daily News.”

He said when reaching the proper age, he landed a job at the local bakery and packaged products, and during another summer worked in a local shoe store while attending college.

“My summers were spent working at a manufacturing plant,” he said. “The next year I worked in a local broom factory, and the following summer I worked at a battery plant.”

Now retired, he and his wife live in Greenville.

Zeiter, who started writing his book nine months ago, said it is available at the local Hallmark Store in Greenville, or via Amazon, Barnes & Noble and AuthorHouse.
