GREENVILLE — A man facing felony assault charges following a May 29 “road rage” incident was arraigned in Darke County Common Pleas Court on Monday.

Nathan Allen Nisley, 33, of Rawson, Ohio, had a “not guilty” plea entered on his behalf, despite his insistence on entering no plea.

“I would like to enter no plea, not ‘not guilty’ or any plea,” Nisley told the court via a video conference link from the Darke County Jail. “My attorney has not been here to talk to me and it seems like he’s just rambling off on things that have not been negotiated with me. If he’s going to continue this conduct, I want another attorney immediately.”

Nisley’s court-appointed defense attorney, Dave Rohrer, told the court that a competency report received by his office July 8 showed his client was “incompetent to stand trial.”

The defendant repeatedly interrupted the judge, prosecutor and his own defense attorney during the proceedings.

Nisley was arrested by Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies May 29 following an accident on U.S. Route 127 near Childrens Home-Bradford Road. Investigation revealed that Nisley, driving a 2012 Ford Fiesta, changed lanes and struck a motorcycle bearing two riders, both of whom were ejected from the bike. The two received treatment for their injuries and were released.

On each second-degree felony count, Nisley faces a maximum penalty of eight years in prison and $15,000 in fines.

Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan Hein continued a $20,000 bond for Nisley and ordered a competency hearing scheduled for July 25.

Others appearing in Common Pleas Court on Monday for arraignment include Maureen Fredrick and Jesse Steen.

Fredrick faces four charges, including misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, telecommunications harassment and resisting arrest, and one felony count of assaulting a police officer. She pleaded not guilty. Fredrick was arrested June 18 after calling police dispatch 11 times in less than an hour and then verbally assaulting responding officers. The assault charge stems from kicking the officer while being arrested. She is free on bond.

Steen was arrested in June for violating a protection order. He already faces two counts of domestic violence and one count of resisting arrest for an incident in April. He pleaded not guilty via video conferencing. He is being held in the Darke County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
