GREENVILLE — The annual Bear’s Mill Candlelight Walk and Christmas Open House took place December 2.

“It is a beautiful winter evening,” Jim Poeppelman said.

Poeppelman, of Versailles, Ohio, has been a maintenance volunteer at Bear’s Mill for about 20 years. But on this night, in addition to other duties, he ushered folks around the food table.

“Help yourself to hot dogs, marshmallows and hot chocolate,” he announced throughout the event.

According to Poeppelman, the mill is a treasure.

“We are so lucky to have it here in Darke County,” he said.

That is also the word Mary and John Gadberry, of Hamilton, received about the mill. They found the hour drive worthwhile.

“This is our first time – we just found it,” Mary said. “I wanted the fire. The illumination reminds me very much of Christmas.”

In addition to the Gadberry’s, a packed crowd, young and young-at-heart, made their way down the creek — lined candlelit path to the warm and welcoming bonfire. As it crackled, it provided a great glow for guests as they loaded up hot dogs and marshmallows on mill-provided roasting forks. Shopping and more treats were available inside the mill store. Bear’s Mill Executive Director Marti Goetz was very pleased about the turnout.

“The weather is great,” she said. “We love to share the beauty of our historic mill and its beautiful surroundings. The community, in turn, supports us with donations. We are always glad to be able to continue the mission of preserving one of Darke County’s treasures.”
