History committee needs help

UNION CITY, Ohio — Union City’s Wall of History committee is looking for help from the public.

The committee’s chairwoman and founder, Betty Grimes, said the group is looking for anyone interested in history and the history of the village. The group was founded March 16, 2011, with a mission to preserve the history of Union City, Ohio, from its beginning into the present and beyond.

Help is needed to identify people in historical photos the group has collected. Volunteers also are needed to help organize those photos, as well as notebooks, records and newspaper clippings.

The committee also encourages members of the public to make use of those items that have been collected so far, or even just to peruse the collection out of curiosity.

The collection — which, for now, is housed on a tabletop and a few shelves just inside the village hall — includes material on the incorporation of the village, early ordinances and council minutes, business information, contracts, genealogical information, maps and more. The collection can be found at the Municipal Building, 419 E. Elm St.

There are many photos from early businesses and events as well as school group photos. Help is needed from the public to identify the subjects in the photos. In an effort to help with this project, The Daily Advocate intends to regularly publish photos from the Wall of History collection, so readers might contact the committee with some identification information.

Even more photos, papers and records are being held in the homes of committee members, as there is not enough space to put the items on display or store them in an area that would allow them to be usable by the public. Anyone who would be willing to donate space would be greatly appreciated by the committee as well.

Grimes also said the committee is looking for someone with graphic design experience who would be willing to donate their time and expertise to help create a brochure for the committee, so help publicize the Wall of History.

Anyone who can provide any help in any form is asked to call Betty Grimes at 937-968-4756.
