Beach open through Labor Day

WAYNE LAKES — Nostalgia is defined as a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

Some say that defines the experience of Wayne Lakes Beach. For those wanting one last local summer experience, Wayne Lakes Beach is open this weekend through Labor Day. Wayne Lakes Council Member Joan Falknor said some folks come because the beach triggers nostalgia. One was a former lifeguard who worked at the beach in the 1940’s.

“I give them a tour and an ice cream cone,” Falknor said. “They are amazed. This used to be a little shack here, now we have everything. It is fun.”

Another recent guest came for the first time to capture the beach’s unique ambiance, Falknor said.

“He was from Coldwater,” she said. He said, ‘I have been all over Ohio, and I have never seen anything like this’. That weekend he returned with his kids.”

Falknor said she is planning some fun activities for the weekend, such as volleyball tournaments and other games. In addition, the Darke County Health Department gave the new kitchen its seal of approval, according to Falknor, making the kitchen safe, sanitary and legal. The hot food coming from the improved state-of-the-art concession stand includes: hot dogs, Coney dogs, corn dogs, hamburgers, BBQ beef, chicken tenders, french fries, cheesy fries, loaded fries, onion rings, cheese sticks, breaded veggies, pizza rolls, chips, pizzas, walking tacos, ice cream, candy, drinks, other snacks and the biggest seller: the over-sized Texas Tenderloin. The Beach Concession stand will stay open through October if it attracts enough business, Falknor said. She is thinking of names for the eatery.

“It was Gary’s (late Village of Wayne Lakes Mayor Gary Lee Young) dream to have three seasons out here to serve food,” Falknor said. “We are it within about eight miles for lakeside dining. We are hoping to provide some carry-out pizza for people at the village. We have everything: people can sit out here and look at the lake, while eating delicious food prepared by our great cook Jackie Grant. She has about 14 years experience in the pizza business. We have a new pizza oven – it is the latest modern oven – and she knows how to work it.”

According to Falknor, the past season was good at Wayne Lakes, despite the 19 days of bad weather. Some guests were regulars, but some came from further places, such as: South Dayton; Urbana; Anderson, Indiana and an inquiry came from Florida. For those lacking a Wayne Lakes Beach experience, it is not too late for this year.

“Put this on your summer bucket list,” Falknor said. “Come out and see us – it’s going to be a great time!”

Wayne Lakes Beach is located at 1180 Main Drive, in Greenville. Weekend hours through Labor Day are 1-7 p.m, weather permitting. For now, the restaurant is open Friday, Saturday and Sundays evenings, from 5-8 p.m. For more information, call the beach concession stand at 937-547-1033.
