Darke County unemployment at 3.8 percent in November

DARKE COUNTY — More people were unemployed in Darke County in November than in October, according to information just released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Darke County’s estimated unemployment in November was 3.8 percent, up from 3.4 percent in October.

The county’s employment rate ranked 14th best in the state in November. County unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted.

The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate showed a slight increase in October, rising to 4.5 from October’s rate of 4.4 percent. The rate in November 2014 was 5.2 percent.

The civilian labor force in Ohio grew from an estimated 5,702,000 in October to 5,711,000 in November. The labor force participation rate was estimated at 62.4 percent. The population of working age people in the state grew by about 4,000 in November.

The U.S. unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was estimated at 5.0 percent in November, holding steady with the October rate. A year ago, in November 2014, U.S. unemployment was at 5.8 percent. An estimated 59.3 percent of the total population was working in November, nationwide.

In Darke County, the labor force in November was estimated at 26,200 people, with 25,200 of those listed as employed.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary November 2015 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.0 percent in Geauga and Medina counties to a high of 9.7 percent in Monroe County. From October, unemployment rates increased in 81 counties, decreased in six counties and did not change in one county. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio (not seasonally adjusted) was 4.4 percent in November.

Eleven counties had unemployment rates at or below 3.5 percent in November. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Geauga and Medina, were Mercer, 3.1 percent; Delaware, Holmes and Lake, 3.3 percent; Hancock and Union, 3.4 percent; and Auglaize, Putnam and Wyandot, 3.5 percent.

Seven counties had unemployment rates at or above 7.0 percent in November. The counties with the highest rates, other than Monroe, were Meigs and Noble, 7.4 percent; Jefferson and Scioto, 7.2 percent; Adams, 7.1 percent; and Morgan, 7.0 percent.

Surrounding counties’ rates of unemployment for November 2015 were as follows: Auglaize, 3.5 percent, up from 3.1 percent; Mercer, 3.1 percent, up from 2.8 percent; Miami, 4.1 percent, up from 3.8 percent; Montgomery, 4.7 percent, up from 4.3 percent; Preble,4.5 percent, up from 4.2 percent; and Shelby,4.0 percent, up from 3.6 percent.
