GREENVILLE — A Benefit for Greenville High School’s Orchestra trip and St. Mary’s Catholic School Eighth grade trip, took place December 3.

The event took place at Greenville Elks Lodge. The Greenville Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #1139 sponsored the event, according to event organizer Emily Saylor. Her son Evan, is one of the eighth graders taking the trip.

“Our benevolent group, here at the Elks, provided both the meal and the hall,” she said. “This allows all proceeds to go to the kids.”

Each student was given two tickets to sell for $20 a plate. The dinner, included prime rib or grilled chicken breast, baked potato, green beans, salad bar and dessert. The GHS Orchestra performed after dinner. Some St. Mary’s eighth — graders helped with setting up, serving, bussing and clean-up, such as Carleigh Cox.

“I’m excited to travel with my classmates and see them outside of school,” she said.

St. Mary’s eighth — grade student Carlos Badell is happy for the opportunity to travel.

“It is important because we get to see how people live outside of where we live,” he said. “It is also something that helps us to communicate and not argue.”

“ Working together to organize our plans for the trip gives us a chance to bond,” added St. Mary’s eighth — grade student Landon Kreusch.

Sylvia Kelly — Pressnall, of Greenville, has been a retired teacher from St. Mary’s for three years. She still handles the fund — raising with the children, for their annual class trip. She taught math and religion for 24 years. Carlos Badell is her grandson.

This year, 11 students are taking the trip, in May. According to Kelly — Pressnall, the students have a heavy hand in the planning. They choose the destination and the itinerary, as long as it is educational. Many life skills are learned on the trip.

“Going to a restaurant and learning to tip without your parents can be educational,” Kelly — Pressnall said. “We only stay at business-class hotels, because I try to teach them social skills in a business world. I try to arrange to travel on as many different modes of transportation possible. Some of these kids have never been out of Darke County,” she added.

Orchestra Director for Greenville City Schools J.R. Price echoes Kelly — Pressnall’s thoughts.

“The life education is invaluable,” Price said of the January trip. “For some, this is a first flight, first stay in a hotel and a first trip to Disney World and Universal Studios.”

According to price, a dvd of the GHS Orchestra performing, was sent to Disney representatives. In turn, GHS Orchestra was invited to perform at Disney. In addition, the orchestra will participate in an educational clinic that is recognized by the Ohio Music Education Association. Students get to provide music for an animated movie, and watch the end result.

“They teach us how to be professional musicians,” Price said. “We do this every four years. When we get a chance to perform at Disney, one of the greatest stages in the whole world, we must try to offer that to our students.”

Donations for the trips can be made to the GHS and St. Mary’s school offices.
