GREENVILLE - Darryl Mehaffie is seeking his third term in office when he will be running unopposed in Tuesday’s primary election.

Mehaffie has ended his sixth year as state central committeeman for the Republican party, and can’t wait to continue with his work in the office.

Mehaffie took over the post when Dick Adams went to work in the House.

As a central committee man, Mehaffie is on the budget and oversight committee, watches over the money and represents the 5th District, comprised of all of Preble and Miami counties, parts of Darke County and the largest section in Montgomery County.

According to him there are 66 central committee members, 33 men and 33 women.

“My counterpart, Lisa Hayes of Montgomery County, has some opposition this year,” Mehaffie said. “There are two running against her.”

A central committee member, he said, runs the Republican State party.

“We screen candidates for the government…whoever is running…and we end up endorsing them,” he said. “We provide services for all 88 counties when local people are running. That decreases the mailing costs if they go through us.”

Mehaffie said he spends a lot of time away from home here in Darke County, but enjoys it.

“We’re so busy now, it’s pathetic,” he said. “I’ve gotten my third appointment from the governor. He reappointed me to Edison Board of Trustees a couple of years, then the State Board of Education and now the Ohio Arts Council, the umbrella that supports all arts organizations. I’m learning a lot.”

In the political arena, Mehaffie said he started out with Congressman Tom Kindness, then Buzz Lukens, then John Boehner and then went to work for Keith Faber after dropping out a year.

Locally, Mehaffie is involved with Garst Museum, is vice chairman of the Edison Board of Trustees and is active with the Community College System in Ohio.

He said wife MaryAnn supports him in his endeavors.

“Se goes with me a lot of the time,” he said.

Mehaffie, a former director of the Darke County Agricultural Society (fair board), was an educator, with 30 years at Northmont City School System before retiring in 1996.
