GREENVILLE - Despite a new venue this year, the Annie Oakley Festival has been dubbed a success by its committee members.

“We’ve had fantastic attendance,” said President Bill Gunkle. “I think it’s done fantastic. I’m very pleased with the turnout.”

Miss Annie Oakley 2014 Hayley Maher welcomed guests at the opening ceremony on Friday and Country Harmony, comprised of sisters JoEllen Melling and Jennifer Peck, sang the National Anthem.

The specialty shows, such as the Greenville Fast Draw, Western Arts Showcase, with whip speed and accuracy and the international bullwhip fast draw took place Saturday, and the Annie Oakley Festival Care Show was held on Sunday afternoon.

Attracting a lot of the crowds, especially on Sunday, were the family fun games with 30 contestants signed up, including water balloon toss, sack races, rolling pin throwing for ladies and pole throw contests for guys 18 and older. A football team, known as the Ohio Cardinals semi-pro team of Darke County competed in the pole throwing. There are 24 team members on the roster.

A 50/50 shoot-out on Saturday afternoon, pitted three former Miss Annie Oakleys [Jennifer Knick, Laura Francis and Courtney Osborne] against other competitors. Winner was Madison Brown, who shot from 120 feet behind the ballooned target that is used annually in the Miss Annie Oakley Shooting Competition, three days prior to the opening of the festival.

The Hess family was seen cutting up lumber in a sawmill demonstration over the weekend, and the melodrama was performed all three days with two performances on Saturday. A petting zoo, provided by the Ansonia FFA, was available for festival-goers to visit.

Vendors were busy throughout the weekend selling their products; the concession stands fed the crowds and there were three historical bus tours an Saturday and two on Sunday.

Entertainment throughout the weekend was provided by Brian Benedict, the Singing Fireman, Country Harmony, Mark Depoy and the Roadside Attraction, Spittin’ Image, The Classics and Tempest. Another feature was the talent competition at the Entertainment Tent on Sunday afternoon.
