ARCANUM - Dollar General opened up a store in Arcanum on Sunday.
The store is 7,300 square feet, which is a traditional format for the company, and sits where the bowling alley previously sat.
“We were sorry to see the bowling alley leave, because it was recreation for the residents,” Mayor Judith Fourman said.
However, she feels that the town’s new addition will be an added strength to the community.
“I think it’s quite an asset,” she said. “We always welcome new businesses to the village.”
According to Village Administrator Col. Bill Sinnes, the company has been trying to put a store in the village for years. However, there were issues with zoning.
“On one other occasion … they tried a different piece of property and people didn’t think it would look right there, and it wasn’t zoned correctly,” he said.
Fourman added that the company looked at a property on East Second Street at one point, however, the lot was not large enough.
Dollar General has been in the process of constructing and opening up the store where it currently sits since early this year. According to Fourman, the company got the appropriate zoning permits in February.
Kyle Baker, store manager, said the store opened on schedule.
“It’s a very standard process. It takes about a week,” he said. “They come in, they set up the fixtures, then we get big trucks and fill it up.”
The store is open between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and has a grand opening scheduled for Sept. 9, beginning at 8 a.m.
The first 50 shoppers will receive a $10 gift card to the store, and the first 200 shoppers will be given a Dollar General tote bag, along with other giveaways, Jaclyn Dees, communication specialist for Dollar General said in an email interview.
She added that the company is thoughtful with the design of the stores in order to align with local building codes to be compliant with the character of the locations they serve.
