GREENVILLE — The Greenville cross country team ran 571 laps in a jogathon on Saturday morning as a fundraiser for the Green Wave program.

Greenville had 29 high school and junior high runners plus two coaches running quarter-mile laps. The team accumulated more than 140 miles with the top runners running more than 5 miles each. The team’s inaugural fundraiser was scheduled to last for an hour but was cut short about 15 minutes because of lightning.

Practice for the Greenville cross country team will begin Monday with approximately 50 runners expected for the 2014 season, coach Scott Strain said.

The Green Wave will begin the 2014 season on Aug. 23 at Centerville’s Saturday Night Lights meet. Middle school races will begin at 4:20 p.m. with the varsity girls racing at 8:45 and the varsity boys racing at 9:10.

Greenville’s Treaty City Invitational is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 30.
