ANSONIA -A young child was airlifted Thursday night after being accidentally struck in the abdomen by a projectile from an “air powered” pellet rifle.

At 8:20 p.m. the Ansonia Police Department was called to East Canal Street. The child, who was alert and conscious, was transported by Care Flight to Children’s Medical Center, in Dayton for surgery and placed in the intensive care unit, police said.

The Ansonia Police Department is investigating the incident and will release further information as it is received if any charges are filed.

“It’s like a BB gun, a single shot device, in addition to loading pellets you have to pump it to cock it each time to shoot,” said Ansonia Chief of Police Frank Shapiro of the rifle.

The department did say it was a case of “I didn’t know the gun was loaded,” that any weapon should be treated as if it was loaded and ready to fire.
