Deadlines, stress, self-employment and juggling a family

Today our lives are more than busy. Our deadlines can be stressful. I believe the key is time management, but how does that come into play when you are a single mom and suddenly self- employed because your employer decides to outsource your job and the jobs of your staff.

Imagine going to work as usual, feeling a little happier today because it’s your birthday. You’ve always enjoyed your job and found it rewarding. But today everything changes for you and your family in a matter of seconds. It’s nothing that you even saw coming. Today you are told that it has been decided that it would be better business to cut cost and outsource your job and the jobs of your staff. This is a place of business that you have been employed for several years and where you make a living to support your three children and yourself. It’s your income, you and your children’s health benefits, etc. It is devastating.

Where would you begin to start over? I personally know a young woman that this happened to. She is a mother who has three children depending on her so giving up is not an option. No time to allow for depression or to even catch your breath. She is a talented young woman who is creative and smart. So she tapped her resources that you had. She had a camera and started using it. She started doing photography for families, then for musicians. Currently, she has added video along with photography, and website building to her business. This is beneficial for musicians, because she can accommodate their needs in one stop.

This is not an easy road. The stress levels are great because it is not a study income or a 9 to 5 job. It means evenings, weekends and traveling. It also means late nights of editing and working to complete deadlines for clients. There are no health benefits, pension plans or vacation days or sick time.

Remember also, that supporting your family financially is critical, but there are also your children’s sports, school programs and volunteering. This mom not only attends her children’s games and activities but volunteers to help out.

It’s not an easy road, but with few jobs available and low wages when you do find something, your choices are limited.

The support and understanding of your family and friends is crucial during this time.

The young woman that I am talking about in the column today is my daughter. I am proud of her and her accomplishments.

This same scenario has affected many people in our area and throughout our country. Perseverance must be the key. This Career minded woman and any man or woman who has found themselves in this position is to be commended for their hard work and efforts.

“Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it.” - Ella Wheeler Wilcox
