Faith United Methodist Church will be hosting a “Family Picnic/ Movie Night” for the Arcanum community on Aug. 9. They wish to invite families of the community to join them for a picnic meal with hamburgers and hot dogs at 6:30 p.m. with games for all ages to follow and a showing of “Planes” at dusk.

All activities, including the movie, will be outside, so bring your lawn chairs or blankets. Please plan to join them for all or part of the evening. In case of inclement weather, activities will be moved inside. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend with your family. There is no cost to attend. You do not need a reservation, but if you plan on attending please let them know so they can plan on how much food to prepare. Contact Don Taylor at 692-5765 or the Faith Church office at 692-8934 with the number planning to attend. Hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Hi-Tec Automotive on their recent 20-year anniversary and celebration of fun the last weekend of June. Tom and Traci Besecker, and Alex Ashbaugh welcomed customers, family, and friends to join them at 7234 Alternate 49-East with a cookout, door prizes, grilling compliments of Napa, on-site vendors such as Napa, AC Delco, Advanced Auto Parts, Jasper, Castrol, Tire reps and many more to celebrate. I heard one of the highlights of the event was Traci’s homemade ice cream and the unveiling of their new logo and sign on the property. For great service be sure to check out Hi-Tec Automotive if you are in need of some automotive repair.

Happy 90th birthday to Juanita Besecker! Juanita celebrated her birthday with family and friends earlier this month. She was married to Verlin Besecker who passed away in 2006. She is the mother to three sons; Thomas (Linda), Ronald (Karen), and Daniel (Patricia). She has eleven grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Way to go Arcanum Fire Company! We are so fortunate to have the many volunteers that serve us at the fire department and rescue. The grant and many local donations made it possible to purchase an extraction tool for use during car accident. Chief Kurt Troutwine and his staff were on hand when the Ohio State Fire Marshall, Larry Marshall presented the grant to members of the department earlier this month. Did you know that 70 percent of Ohio is protected by volunteer fire departments just like our Arcanum Fire Company. The State Fire Marshall’s office supports local FDs and assists in their missions with grants and training for local volunteer fire fighters.

Congratulations to Trevor Shelley, 2014 Franklin-Monroe graduate on receiving an academic scholarship to Wilmington College. Trevor plans to major in agronomy and agriculture business.

Summer fun is planned in Gordon on Aug. 2, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the village park. All are invited to come and join in on the fun. The Verona Fire Department will once again bring water fun to this event. They will have a Kiddie Tractor Ride and slip-n-slides for the younger children. Pulled pork sandwiches catered by Baumbach BBQ, steaming hot corn-on-the-cob, hot dogs, chips and cookies will be available. This event is free but donations will be accepted. There will also be kickball games and a showing of the movie “God is Not Dead” later in the evening. In case of bad weather, the meal and movie will be held inside Gordon United Methodist Church. For more information, please call Peggy Foureman at 884-7470.

Local youth pastor, Dan Kuhbander took an unusual “dip in the pool” last weekend. At the end of a very successful week of Vacation Bible School at Immanuel Baptist Church, the children were challenged to invite their friends and neighbors to a pool party at Arcanum Pool. Attendance was very successful and Pastor Dan lived up to the challenge and jumped off the diving board fully dressed in his Sunday best suit!

I heard on the radio this week talk about how we are enjoying “San Diego weather;” while the weather has been wonderful for the most part, we are just a little over half-way through the summer and wonder will we have another nasty winter with all the snow, ice, and cold temps? Get out and enjoy the weather, festivities in our community and make some memories to treasure later this year during the winter months!
