Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for family get-togethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag, and a common musical accompaniment is “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States. The day became a legal holiday in 1941, but the tradition of celebrating July 4th goes back to the 18th century. The Continental Congress voted the resolution for independence on July 2, 1776; however, it was not formally adopted until 2 days later on the 4th. Interestingly enough, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1826.

Some of you may remember former resident Coach Hennemyre from the 1970s or maybe he was one of your high school teachers. John and LaVerne (Deeter) Hennemyre celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last week. They were married on June 27, 1964, at the First Brethren Church, Pleasant Hill, by Rev. Carl Barber. They are the parents of two children, Jon of Olmsted Falls and Beth of Pleasant Hill. They have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A celebratory open house was held over the weekend at the same church where they were married. Congrats!

Summer improvement projects are underway at the school campus. If you plan on visiting this summer please note the following projects that may limit parking and access into the building at times: 1) Cleaning activities of the exterior masonry block due to the widespread efflorescent staining of the school building will commence on June 18. The cleaning will be performed in a manner and sequence that will minimize disruptions to school activities and is expected to take approximately four to six weeks. 2) Asphalt paving and re-sealing of the campus parking lots and roadways (including the Field House) will take place during the week of July 7. Please note: Preparations/work may take place prior to the actual sealing and will be marked accordingly. The administration thanks you for your patience and understanding as they work to maintain the buildings and grounds.

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” ~ Erma Bombeck

There, I guess King George will be able to read that.” ~ John Hancock (upon signing the American Declaration of Independence)
