GREENVILLE — Comedian David Dean gave a free performance at St Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville Sunday night. The show, titled ‘Laugh All Night,’ was arranged by local Christian radio station STAR 88.3.

Naomi Cantrell, Greenville area Community Representative for STAR 88.3, said that Dean has been doing “clean” stand-up comedy for 25 years. Dean is based in Huntington, Indiana.

“David has been friends with the station for years,” Cantrell said. “We had another event with him in Fort Wayne earlier this year, and the turnout was so huge we had to schedule a second show.”

Though Dean’s performances are offered to the public free of charge, attendees are asked to RSVP via the station’s website so they have some idea how many are planning to attend. Over 400 people RSVP’d to the Greenville show.

“This show is our way of giving love through laughter,” Cantrell said. “We like to find ways to love the community and make it a better place to live. Tonight we wanted to offer people a chance to sit and laugh and not have to worry about what the kids are gonna hear.”

Cantrell said that the difficult times many people are going through make it essential to find the opportunity for fun and laughter.

“We want you to leave feeling refreshed and ready to tackle another week,” Cantrell said. “Sometimes humor gets a message across that you wouldn’t hear otherwise,”

STAR 88.3 first moved into the Greenville area two years ago, taking over the former Christian radio station Joy FM. Since then they’ve been taking part in a number of charitable endeavours aimed at helping the community.

“The community has really accepted us, and this is just a good way for us to say thank you and give back,” Cantrell said.

Cantrell has also been surprised by the enthusiastic response to the comedy shows the station has put on.

“It’s been so well-received. We were amazed,” Cantrell said. “People really need comedy. We do concerts and that works really well, but we’ve never seen the kind of response we do when we do comedy. You say there’s gonna be a Christian comedian and people flock to it.”

Cantrell said the enthusiasm even preceded the actual event.

“People were overwhelmingly excited about it,” Cantrell said. “They were like, ‘Oh my God, I have to be there.’”

David Dean expressed similar enthusiasm for the STAR 88.3 shows.

“We always have the best crowds when we come to these shows,” Dean said. “Lots of families.”

Dean also talked about how the times we live in make laughter more important than ever.

“We’re at a time now when life is tough,” Dean said, “The economy, politics. My job is to come in and just refresh the hearts of the people watching. There’s people here tonight who need a good laugh, and if something touches a nerve, or strikes a funny bone, then I did my job.”
