Arcanum News: Criterion Club honors Chastain

0

On November 14, the Arcanum Criterion Club members met at the home of Jean Hillis with Marilyn Walden, director of the Arcanum Library, speaking to the group.

Marilyn has been with the library for 30 years and director for the last 16 years. Marilyn shared information about the many, many programs offered at our library, for all children and adults.

In addition, members took pause to remember the passing of their long standing member, Jo Chastain, with the reading of a resolution of respect in Jo’s honor: “Whereas, God in his infinite wisdom has taken from our midst our beloved member, Jo Chastain, the members of Criterion Club do pause this 14th day of November 2016 to pay respect. For a period of over 40 years she was always faithful in performing all duties in Criterion Club; it is now our duty and privilege to record our appreciation of her. Be it resolved the members of Criterion Club will long remember Jo for her wisdom and leadership ability which she used in keeping the standard of the Club. That the sudden removal of such a life from our midst leaves a vacancy which will be felt not only by friends of Criterion but also by the people of the community, that the loss of such a faithful, efficient member, whose contributions of literary ability showed individuality, careful preparation and concern for all things, especially her fellow man, will long be remembered.”

The 2016 Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society (AWTHS) are busy getting ready for its annual Christmas Extravaganza on Thanksgiving Weekend. On Friday, November 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. they will have their Preview Shopping Extravaganza, and all-day shopping on Saturday, November 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be open to welcome everyone at 123 West George Street, Arcanum. The bazaar will again feature Mrs. Santa’s Bake Shoppe with lots of goodies to share at your holiday gatherings. There will be daily door prizes (need not be present to win), a 50/50 raffle (tickets are $5 each); and an in-house raffle at $1 each or six for $5. Additionally, Beck’s Boutique will feature fun-filled, one-of-a-kind gift items clothing, and accessories. On Saturday only, shoppers are invited to the Bits-n-Pieces room for “free” decorations and craft items.

Volunteers of the society have prepared many special items specifically for this year’s bazaar, they include a forest of trees (decorated, undecorated), wreaths, swags, garlands, sleighs, etc. in many colors and styles. More items include snowmen of all types, hand-decorated Christmas cards, tobacco lath starts, trees, snowmen, and gates. New things this year will be Denim Country items, Fall back to Autumn items, Kid’s Korner, Santa Claus Land, Nativity(ies) and angels(s) and the traditional red and green up-cycled wreaths, garlands and table decorations. The best feature of all again this year will be their low, low, low prices. All proceeds from this event will be used for the special projects at the historical society and our community; you will want to make sure you put this event on your calendar.

“Thanksgiving dinners take 18 hours to prepare. They are consumed in 12 minutes. Halftimes take 12 minutes. This is not coincidence.” ~Erma Bombeck
