Versailles News: Coming of Age

0

Perhaps there is hope for me after all. Recently I attended a couple of committee and board meetings in which I am one of the senior members in both experience and age. In each instance I saw the reflection of my former self in women half my age. They spoke in absolutes, certain of that which is absolutely uncertain.

We discussed ways to engage our membership since the conventional ways weren’t producing the desired results. They were quick to condemn the ways of my generation finding fault in my writing which buried the facts within an informational article. I found no fault in what they said, I asked for their input because I believed a change was in order. They were schooled differently than I. Notice I said differently not better, because I do not believe they are better schooled.

It’s true I have my own writing style but it was patterned from the writing styles in my day. It’s also true that anyone can write and publish today for which I am proof enough when only a couple of generation’s earlier writers were the well-educated within a society where few received more than a grade school education.

The advice I received in one meeting was to get to the point. Place the facts in the first paragraph. Little did these young advisers know that I worked hard to evolve into a writer that could craft 200 words out of something I could summarize in 30 words or less. Now my acquired skill has become antiquated, in part by the impatience of youth, as well as, the technological way of today.

Hopefully this does not sound like I’m defending myself or making excuses, rather it’s my means of announcing that I humbly stand in the shoes of my elders who graciously allowed me to find my place in serving the community. And I in turn respectfully listen and learn the ways of the tomorrow’s leaders still in need of learning, evolving and cultivating.
