Arcanum News: Another perfect season

The Arcanum Lady Trojans were the 7th grade CCC tournament champs. The 7th grade Lady Trojans ended their basketball season with a perfect record of 18-0. The road that led the Trojans to be the 2016-17 CCC Champions included three tournament victories against Miami East (35-9), Covington (38-15), and finally Bradford (40-22).

The 7th grade girls’ team was composed of the following girls: Madelyn Fearon, Ellie Fout, Peyton Garbig, Taylor Gray, Meghan McCans, Karlin Merriman, and Hailey Unger. Coaches were Ashley Matheson and Rachel Fearon; and team manager was Emilie Fout. The girls had a great season and worked very well together; they pushed one another every day to be better the next. Their hard work and determination showed on the court and led them to a perfect season. Congratulations TEAM, congratulations girls!

The third annual Trojan Alumni Homecoming will be held April 22 at Arcanum High School. Come enjoy a relaxed, casual evening reminiscing and reconnecting with classmates and friends. Registration for the evening will begin at 5 p.m. in the school cafetorium. At that time there will be tours available for anyone wishing to see the school, as well as light appetizers. Dinner will be served by Batdorf’s Red Barn Catering beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The menu will consist of tossed salad with French or ranch dressing, boneless pork loin, Italian marinated chicken strips, green beans with almonds, red skin potatoes, and dinner roll, followed by chocolate or white cake for dessert. Drinks will include coffee (regular and decaf), sweet ice tea, lemonade, and ice water.

Entertainment will be provided by the High School Jazz Band. To be a part of this special event, reservations must be made by April 1. Questions, call Nancy Perrin Ady at (937) 269-6318. If time allows, plan to come early and visit the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society located at 123 W. George St. in Arcanum. They will be open that day from 1-4 p.m. At the Historical Society, you can enjoy tours of the beautifully restored house, view the displays, and peruse the reference library as well as the Arcanum School memorabilia. Jason Schondelmyer will return as the new head varsity football coach at Arcanum High School in the fall. No stranger to Arcanum, Jason served in the same capacity from 1999-2005. The program had a successful run qualifying for the OHSAA playoffs in 2002 and 2005, including advancing to the second round in 2005. Mr. Schondlemyer was named the Cross County Conference Coach of the Year twice, Miami Valley Coaches Association Division V Coach of the Year twice, Southwest District Division V Coach of the Year and Darke County Coach of the Year. Welcome back!

Summer is coming; are you looking for a summer position? The Arcanum Pool is looking to hire lifeguards as soon as possible. If you are interested, you must be 16 and must complete an application at the Arcanum City Building. Applicants will need to complete lifeguard training at the local YMCA or show proof of completion. All applications will be reviewed by the new Village Administrator, Bill Kessler. What a fun summer job this would be at the pool in the sun! Check it out!

Are you looking forward to the Arcanum Farmers Market? Are you thinking spring and what to plant in your garden? The Arcanum Farmers Market will be looking for vendors to set up at the Veterans Park area besides the AWTHS this summer. If you are interested in participating please call Sharon Troutwine for details at 937-692-5128. The Farmer’s Market will start on Saturday mornings starting in June. Think ahead plan your gardens and flowers so you will have something to share — produce, hand made soaps, antiques and quality crafts are examples. No junk or garage sale items please.

Congratulations to the Arcanum High School Concert Band who received the Superior Rating of I at District Contest. Now it is on to State Contest and more practice!

Spring officially arrives today – March 20 — and I always look for the buds on my pussywillow bush to open, also always enjoy the magnolia bushes in bloom, as well as the redbud bushes in our village; what is your favorite sign of spring?
