Perhaps you’ve found yourself in a somewhat heated debate on whether the toilet paper goes over or under. You might be surprised to know you are not alone. In fact more than $100,000 US dollars were spent on a study to determine whether most people put their toilet paper on the holder over or under? The answer was 3 out of 4 people preferred over the front.

Yes, gone are the days of outhouses with corn cobs, newspapers or the Sears catalog. However, that’s not the case in many parts of the world where they do not use toilet paper because they do not have adequate plumbing to breakdown toilet paper or sufficient money to buy paper that is flushed. Europeans consider toilet paper irritating and unclean compared their bidets.
Do you remember a news report regarding how your toothbrush is exposed to airborne fecal matter each time the toilet is flushed? Well, MythBusters performed a month long test by placing 24 toothbrushes in a bathroom, daily they used only two and simply rinsed the other 22 toothbrushes. They also kept two more toothbrushes in an office far from the bathroom. At the end of a month they sent all the toothbrushes to a microbiologist for bacteria testing. The results acknowledged that all the toothbrushes were speckled with microscopic fecal matter, included those that were never inside the bathroom.
Researches in the University of Arizona proved that each time you flush the toilet many water droplets are expelled into the air and fall onto the counter tops, sink, towels, floor, as well as the your toothbrush. That would include the roll of toilet paper that has a ringside seat, so to speak. Since toilet paper is used at a point of entry I’m surprised manufacturers and the media have not yet persuaded us into giving up our toilet paper in favor of convenient sanitized individually packaged personal wipes, such as flushable Wet Ones®. (This is not a personal endorsement for Wet Ones® in fact it is my opinion that if we didn’t get sick from those old public toilet holes of the 50’s and 60’s nothing said in a report will scare me away from toilet paper or indoor plumbing.)
