Versailles News: Life is not pain free

0

We Americans have been so manipulated. It could be our mass media and Hollywood or it could be the capitalists, advertisers, politicians, educators, and/or physicians which collectively shaped the minds of our Western Culture. I suppose there is plenty of blame to go around, including every person that crumbled under the weight society placed upon values.

We have become a culture that seeks pleasure and happiness and believes pain and suffering should be avoided at all costs. Someone needs to speak the truth of this world. We are born, we labor (struggle), we die. Life has its ups and downs, its joys and its sorrows. Pain and suffering has its rightful place in the circle of life. The person with a facelift or tummy tuck may defy time but never the Grim Reaper.

Sometimes medicine, despite all means known to this present day, cannot take us beyond our mortal limitations. Despite our hopes to be pain free it is not always possible and we may have to live for years in pain, but eventually we do pass on. That’s not morbid, it’s factual. No one gets out of this world alive!

We have become so adverse to pain that doctor prescribed assisted suicides are legal in five states; California, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Colorado and the District of Columbia. Sixteen additional states have placed the law on their ballot. They have been incorrectly termed mercy killings, but such actions are neither merciful to the suffering nor to the person assisting.

The assisted suicide law allows physicians to prescribe a lethal overdose for those who are considered “terminally ill”, meaning they would only have six months or fewer to live. But terminally ill has been broadly interpreted to include those that could live many years with treatment; such as diabetes, HIV, or hepatitis.

In other states there have been cases of life saving medical treatment being denied to patients with significant disabilities or birth defects, as well as doctors persuading family members to sign a Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNR). We can no longer presume a general respect of life among doctors, families or patients. Some families cannot stand up to the financial burden, some patients weaken in suffering and doctors are no longer bound to the Hippocratic oath; a moral code for ethical conduct and practice in medicine to do no harm.

Sometimes perfectly good items, such as computers and clothing become obsolete or outdated, in which case perfectly functional items are tossed on the junkyard heap. But human life should never be treated like a disposable piece of equipment. Human life is invaluable.

Those who say it’s their life and their choice are wrong. None of us own ourselves we did not create ourselves nor do we have the right to kill ourselves. We belong to our creator, His rules prevail, never ours.
