Arcanum News: Happy Thanksgiving

By Vickie Rhodehamel - Arcanum News

Happy Thanksgiving! It’s time once again to gather with family and friends and express thankfulness for each other, all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us and give thanks to God for another year. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in United States and Canada. The day is celebrated as a day of being thankful for the blessings of the crop and of the preceding year. The festival is celebrated on 4th Thursday of November in USA and on 2nd of October in Canada. This day has the tradition of gathering around a table with friends and family. The turkey is the main tradition of this event, and is cooked for all the members present and shared with one another on this special occasion of Thanksgiving Day. I think Erma Bombeck said it best, “What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?” May your Thanksgiving be filled with Peace, Love, and Harmony!

The Annual Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society Christmas Bazaar Fundraiser is this Friday and Saturday. You won’t want to miss it; it’s always the best bazaar in town! You can do your Christmas shopping here for great selection of gifts, Christmas decorations from gently used items and homemade goodies. Hours are Friday evening November 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The AWTHS is located at 123 West George Street in Arcanum.

Grace United Methodist Church, 750 Arcanum-Ithaca Road invites the community to join them as the host the Sinclair Bell Choir in a Christmas performance on Saturday, December 2 at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome; a free-will offering will be taken.

This weekend is also the First Annual Lady Trojan Tip-Off Basketball Tournament at the high school. Junior varsity games will be played at 12 and 1:30 p.m. and the varsity games will be played at 6 and 7:30 p.m. on both days. Admission is $5 for junior varsity games and $6 for varsity games. Also this weekend at Bear’s Mill is the final Art at the Mill exhibit of 2017. View and shop FEAST: three perspectives on dinnerware on the evening of Black Friday at Historic Bear’s Mill from 6 to 8 p.m. The Millrace Potters will be showcasing their work alongside Richmond, Indiana native Terri Logan, a jewelry artist who uses silver and beautiful stones to create minimal, art-esque jewelry. Both the pottery and jewelry will make great gifts for the upcoming holiday! Organizers would love for you to join us at Bear’s Mill for the reception, to meet and hear the artists speak about their work. If you cannot make it to the reception, we recommend you support local on Small Business Saturday (the day after Black Friday) and do some of your holiday shopping at the Mill. Bear’s Mill is located at 6450 Arcanum-Bear’s Mill Road, just eight miles north of Arcanum.

Historic Bear’s Mill looks even better by candlelight. Join them for the Annual Candlelight Walk as step into the Holiday Season with one of our favorite events on Friday, December 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. This is a very popular event and well attended by our supporters so plan to visit, take in the sites and spread good cheer to all that you encounter at Bear’s Mill.

Don’t forget to plan on attending the Christmas in the Park and the first annual Horse Parade on Saturday, December 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 pm. in Arcanum. A very busy day has been planned for this Christmas festival in Arcanum. The day will start off with Breakfast with Santa at the Arcanum High School from 8 to 11 a.m. Local craft vendors and artisans will be both inside and outside at the Arcanum Field House from 12 to 5 p.m. and throughout Ivester park from 12 to 7 p.m. A variety of food trucks will be staged through the park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live Christmas music will be playing in the Field House and throughout the park throughout the day. An ice sculptor will be in the park from noon to 2 p.m. creating unique festive sculptures. A live nativity and petting zoo will be in Ivester Park from Noon to 4 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m. they will have the Candy Cane Hunt in the park complete with prizes for every child. This is a very fun activity for the children to find the hidden candy canes in the park with flashlights. Each candy cane is numbered and they can be redeemed for prizes in the Scout House after the hunt.

The evening will highlight the Christmas Horse Parade beginning at 7 p.m. to officially welcome Santa to the Village of Arcanum. The parade will travel from Main Street through Ivester Park which will be full of lights and festive music. The park will be decorated by various groups and community organizations, and the children will have the opportunity to meet with Santa after the parade in the Scout House. Also, there will be horse and carriage rides available after the parade. These horse-drawn carriage rides will begin in the park and journey through the park and continue to the downtown area. The Arcanum fire department will have a bonfire going to warm up during the winter evening.
