The Christmas in the Park and First Annual Horse Parade Festival starts this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 pm. in Arcanum. A very busy day has been planned for this Christmas festival in Arcanum. The day will start off with Breakfast with Santa at the Arcanum High School from 8 to 11 a.m. Local craft vendors and artisans will be both inside and outside at the Arcanum Field House from 12 to 5 p.m. and throughout Ivester park from 12 to 7 p.m. A variety of food trucks will be staged through the park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live Christmas music will be playing in the Field House and throughout the park throughout the day. An ice sculptor will be in the park from 12 to 2 p.m. creating unique festive sculptures. A live nativity and petting zoo will be in Ivester Park from 12 to 4 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m. they will have the Candy Cane Hunt in the park complete with prizes for every child. This is a very fun activity for the children to find the hidden candy canes in the park with flashlights. Each candy cane is numbered and they can be redeemed for prizes in the Scout House after the hunt.

The evening will highlight the Christmas Horse Parade beginning at 7 p.m. to officially welcome Santa to the Village of Arcanum. The parade will travel from Main Street through Ivester Park which will be full of lights and festive music. The park will be decorated by various groups and community organizations, and the children will have the opportunity to meet with Santa after the parade in the Scout House. Also, there will be horse and carriage rides available after the parade. These horse-drawn carriage rides will begin in the park and journey through the park and continue to the downtown area. The Arcanum fire department will have a bonfire going to warm up during the winter evening.

Congratulations to our annual spelling bee champions! Arcanum Elementary champs are Grace Psczulkoski, and runner-up Trinity Schweitzer. Arcanum Middle School winners are Hannah Kendig, and runner-up Bryson Sharp. Grace and Hannah will participate in the individual county spelling bee competition in January. All four will participate in the team competition. Congratulations to all!

In the last several days our community has lost some community leaders, both retired ministers and both great family patriarchs. The Rev. Hilbert Piel passed on Thanksgiving Day – Rev. Piel pastored several Lutheran churches in the area before retirement. Hilbert and his wife, Mary have owned The Village Flower Shop for over 45 years. Some of you may remember the Rev. George Copus from when he pastored Trinity United Methodist Church in Arcanum years ago, he passed away this week. George and his wife, Lucille had retired to Marion, Ohio a couple of years ago. Thank you for your service, thank you for your testimony, thank for watching over us for many years and serving the community. May you both rest in peace and I pray for comfort for both of your families.

I would like to hear from the Arcanum area churches in order to publish my annual listing of Christmas Eve services, if you would like your church/parish’s information included please contact me via email or telephone. As I have written about in past years, this one night of the year with my family is a tradition to attend a candlelight service together to celebrate on Christmas Eve.
