Greenville boys basketball team loses on Sidney last-second shot

GREENVILLE — While 3.8 seconds doesn’t seem like much, it was a painfully long span of time for the Greenville Green Wave varsity boys basketball squad Friday night as it fell to the now-11-4 Sidney Yellow Jackets 68-67.

Down by one point with less than four seconds to play, the Yellow Jackets’ Andre Gordon pulled off a last-second shot under the bucket to defeat Greenville (7-6 overall, 3-2 in Greater Western Ohio Conference).

The loss is especially painful for the Green Wave, after the team had stormed back in the third period to erase a nine-point halftime deficit.

Greenville head coach Mike Bashore was gracious in defeat, calling Sidney “a good basketball team” with a “fantastic coach.”

“It was all we could do to stay with them early,” he said. “They played well enough to win the game, and they deserved to win the game.”

Sidney came on strong from the start, double-teaming Greenville’s all-time scorer Clay Guillozet for much of the game. Honored before the game with a basketball signed by his teammates and coach, Guillozet ended the night with 16 points.

Down 29-20 at halftime, the Wave’s Peter Pandey sparked the team’s third-period comeback with two consecutive 2-pointers. Greenville soon took the lead 34-33 on a 3-point shot by Isaiah Gable.

From there on, it was a back-and-forth contest. Greenville struggled to contain Sidney’s 6-foot 4-inch forward Lorenzo Taborn, who bulled through the Wave defense for 10 points in the fourth period and 19 points overall.

With less than 30 second left and down 66-64, Greenville’s Aaron Rich brought the entire crowd to its feet with a game-tying layup, also drawing a foul. Rich hit the free throw to put the Wave up 67-66.

Sidney called a timeout with 3.8 seconds left. Grabbing Taborn’s inbound pass, Gordon slid underneath the basket for the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

“No. 20 made a nice move and a nice play,” Bashore said, regarding Gordon’s last-second, game-winner.

Bashore said that while this loss is hard to swallow, he believes the Green Wave squad will be able to move past it.

“Losing like that is tough for these kids,” he said. “As long as we are learning, we will be alright, we can handle it.”

Gable led the Green Wave in scoring, with 18 points followed by Guillozet with 16. Rich finished with 11, and Trae Wood added 10.
