Strong start carries Greenville boys basketball team to a win vs. Vandalia-Butler

GREENVILLE – A 16-0 start to Tuesday’s game propelled Greenville to a 72-57 Greater Western Ohio Conference win against Vandalia-Butler.

The Green Wave came out with intensity early on, Greenville boys basketball coach Mike Bashore said, which is something they hadn’t been doing in previous games.

“It’s something we’ve been waiting on,” Bashore said. “We knew that they had it in them. We just haven’t put it together yet. We were kind of clicking on all cylinders early on.”

Greenville led for all 32 minutes of Tuesday’s game as Butler was charged with a pre-game technical foul, which allowed Isaiah Gable to sink a pair of free throws before the clock even started.

Gable was the catalyst for Greenville’s hot start as he scored 12 points in the first three-and-a-half minutes, which included a pair of 3-pointers. Clay Guillozet added Greenville’s other four points as the Wave started the game on a 16-0 run.

Butler broke its scoreless streak with 4:18 remaining in the opening quarter, but Greenville was firmly in control and led 22-5 through one quarter.

Greenville continued to pour it on in the second quarter with the Wave starting the period on a 16-6 run. Aaron Rich, Devin Hendrix, Trae Wood and Gable all added points early in the second quarter.

Butler scored six of the final eight points in the half, but Greenville led 40-17 entering halftime.

“I thought we played really well early on,” Bashore said. “A lot of great energy early on. We were executing really well. Our defense in the first half I thought was fantastic. I think we might have let off the gas a little bit in the second half, but they kind of ratcheted up their intensity a little bit in the second half. We knew they weren’t going to quit on us.”

Early in the third quarter Greenville increased its lead to a game-high 30 points, 50-20. With the Green Wave then starting to let up, Butler reduced the deficit to 20 points, 55-35, by the end of the quarter.

Butler further reduced its deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring Greenville 22-17 in the period, but the Wave easily won the game 72-57.

“It’s a good win,” Bashore said. “We were in control from the start so I’m pretty proud of how hard they played. It was a big win for us.”

Gable led Greenville with a game-high 31 points on Tuesday. Also for the Wave, Guillozet scored 17 points, Hendrix scored 10, Rich scored seven, Wood scored four, Peter Pandey scored two, and Codi Byrd scored one.

Trey Sanders led Butler with 23 points in Tuesday’s game. Also for the Aviators, Brian Jenkins scored nine points, Bryant Johnson scored six, Zach Ledbetter scored four, Noah Ballard scored three, James Clark scored three, Nathan Stogdill scored three, Torin Fletcher scored two, Cameron Glover scored two, and Alex Wencelweiz scored two.

Greenville improved to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the GWOC North with the win while Butler fell to 4-13 overall and 0-7 in the GWOC North. With Tuesday’s win Greenville remained in a tie with Sidney for second place in the GWOC North, trailing only Trotwood-Madison.

The Green Wave will return to action in a GWOC North game on Friday at Piqua.

“We’ve got a big one Friday night,” Bashore said. “We’ve got to try to keep pace and then hopefully get Trotwood when we get another chance at them.”
