VERSAILLES – Versailles had a larger turnout than usual for its annual Tigers in Training fun and run camp with 61 boys and girls in the third through sixth grades participating.

“Mother Nature cooperated really well, and the kids are having a lot of fun,” Versailles varsity cross country coach Mark Pleiman said. “I think the high school cross country members are having a blast. We’re all having a lot of fun.”

The camp usually averages about 40 kids, Pleiman said, but saw an increase this year. During the four-day camp each of the young runners learned how preparation and running techniques.

“We’ve been talking a lot about running form, talking about how to prepare themselves, what to eat, what to drink,” Pleiman said. “Done our stretching that we do as a team, we’ve shown them how to do that.”

The running camp helped prepare the boys and girls for the Poultry Days 5K and mile fun run by running races and playing games that got them active.

“They’re fun,” Pleiman said of the campers. “I’ll give them that.”

Versailles has had a strong history in cross country with multiple state champions, and it’s good to see the passion for the sport continuing among the younger kids, Pleiman said.

“You get a look at the young ones and see, well, these are kids I’m going to see in a couple of years when they come up to join the program so it’s kind of exciting,” he said.
