TIPP CITY – For the first time in 2016 the Versailles football team faced competition from other teams as the Tigers traveled to Tipp City on Friday for a seven-on-seven passing scrimmage.

Versailles faced teams from Alter, Bethel, Lehman Catholic, Miami East, Northwestern and Tippecanoe in the scrimmage and showed some positive signs early in its preparations for the upcoming season.

“It was good,” Versailles football coach Adam Miller said. “We started off strong and definitely saw improvement today. It’s good to see some fresh competition, people that run different defenses, different offenses.”

The Tigers had just three days of practice prior to attending Friday’s scrimmage. It’s too early to make many judgments about the team, but Miller was happy with what he saw.

“Probably the biggest thing I saw is that the kids were understanding the pass routes better,” he said. “Defensively I think they did a great job of communicating and recognizing the different patterns thrown at them.”

In the seven-on-seven format there were no running plays, no offensive line and no pass rushers. However, it gave the Tigers a chance to work on their passing game as they try to replace two-year varsity starting quarterback Jared Niekamp and other key contributors.

“We’ve got a lot of positions that need filled,” Miller said. “Quarterback’s a big one, running back position, and defensively we’ve got some young defensive backs that we’re trying to get ready.”

Competitions are still wide open for playing time, but Miller thinks the Tigers have some players who are ready to step up and take on larger roles this fall.

“We have a few guys we think can get the job done for us, but it’s way too early to tell,” he said.
