Huber Heights Wayne on top of game again

COLUMBUS (AP) — Huber Heights Wayne has been trying for two seasons to knock down the door that separates it from a coveted first Division I title, but each time Lakewood St. Edward stood in the way.

After four games it appears Wayne (3-0-1) team might be better than ever, and the Warriors are doing it with sophomore quarterback Rashad McKee.

Not counting his statistics in the season-opening 21-21 tie with Pennsylvania’s Archbishop Wood that was called with 9:21 left in the second quarter due to lightning, McKee in the past three games is 36 of 53 for 636 passing yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Warriors, fourth in this week’s Associated Press Division I poll, beat Miamisburg 45-12 last week. They defeated Cincinnati Moeller 35-17 in week two and West Chester Lakota West 51-7 the following game.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champion St. Edward got knocked out of the No. 1 spot by Cincinnati Elder, 15-9, in the 10th consecutive meeting between the schools. Elder (3-1) tied the current series at five wins apiece by snapping the Eagles’ 14-game winning streak that started with a victory against the Panthers a year ago.

St. Edward (3-1) is fifth in the poll but is still three spots ahead of Elder, whose loss was to No.2 Pickerington Central, 20-14, in the first game. Cincinnati Colerain is top ranked.

TIGHT GRIP

When Logan lost a fumble with 1:21 left in the third quarter at Cambridge, the turnover ended a notable streak of 554 plays from scrimmage — a number that’s near 600 when kickoff and punt returns and placekicks are included — of not having given a fumble away, going back to week three last season against Pomeroy Meigs. That’s the equivalent of 11 games.
