TROY – Five Greenville girls tennis players fell one win shy of advancing to the Ohio High School Athletic Association district tournament.

Greenville began the OHSAA Division II sectional tournament on Tuesday at Troy High School. All of the Lady Wave’s athletes won matches but didn’t win enough to advance to the district tournament.

Both of Greenville’s doubles teams fell just one win shy of qualifying for districts.

Senior Molly Hunt and junior Larisa Schmitmeyer, who spent most of the season teamed up at first doubles for Greenville, began sectional tournament play with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Greenon juniors Kendra Gochenour and Maddie Reed 6-1, 6-1. They then beat Catholic Central junior B. Ewing and sophomore L. Williams 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the sectional quarterfinals.

Hunt and Schmitmeyer then lost 6-1, 6-1 to the sectional’s second rated doubles team, Northwestern seniors Addie Smith and Destanee Wilson.

Greenville’s other doubles team, freshman Addie Haupt and sophomore Marabelle Lance, began sectional tournament play by beating Brookville senior Madee Rozelle and junior Allison Winterbotham 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. The Lady Wave duo then swept Urbana senior Olivia Krieger and sophomore Briana Ussher 6-0, 6-0.

But Haupt and Lance then lost 6-0, 6-2 in the sectional quarterfinals to Kenton Ridge senior Olivia Sellars and sophomore Macy Wallace, the sectional’s third rated team.

Like both doubles teams, Greenville freshman singles player Natalie Milligan fell just one win short of advancing to the district tournament.

Milligan, who played first singles for the Lady Wave during the regular season, beat Lehman Catholic sophomore Claire Larger 6-1, 6-4. She then beat Brookville junior Grace Rohrer 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the sectional quarterfinals.

However, Milligan lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kenton Ridge senior Cassandra Freshour, who was the No. 4 rated player in the sectional tournament.

Greenville’s two other singles players both fell two wins short of advancing to the district tournament.

Freshman Abby Swensen began her tournament run with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Milton-Union junior Mercedes Farmer. She then beat Shawnee junior Miranda Potter 6-1, 6-1 before losing 6-2, 6-1 to Greenon senior Arian McNeil, the top rated player in the sectional.

After receiving a first-round bye, sophomore Anna Manges beat Urbana senior Haylee Johns 6-1, 6-0 in her first match. Manges then lost to Northridge junior Thaomy Tran 6-0, 6-0.

Greenville finished its season with a 13-4 record and a Greater Western Ohio Conference Silver Flight championship among its accomplishments. The Lady Wave will lose just one senior, Hunt, to graduation.
