Versailles leads football camp

VERSAILLES – More than 60 boys in the fourth through sixth grades attended Versailles’ three-day youth football camp this past week.

The camp focused on all the basics with the kids learning to throw, catch and tackle. They also learned a little bit about all the positions.

“It went well,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said. “It was good just to teach the kids some basics of football. And we let them get out here and play two-hand touch football, which they love to do.”

In addition to learning about the game, the boys also got to compete in individual drills plus games of two-hand touch football throughout the week.

“The big reason we get them out here is so they can have fun and start developing an interest in football,” Miller said. “It’s neat to be out here and the whole field’s full with kids and you hear a lot of cheering. You can tell they’re having a lot of fun.”

To help Miller and his coaching staff, about 30 members of the Versailles High School football team assisted at the camp. They coached the boys and also will coach during a flag football season in the fall.

“It’s good to get them out here so they start to learn some of the kids’ names,” Miller said. “The kids also look up to the high school kids so it’s neat that they get to have that interaction with them.”

The days spent at the camp will help the youth know who they’re cheering for when the Tigers play on Friday nights in the fall.

“The kids that go to the games on Friday nights they’ll be able to put a name with a face because maybe they coached them in the flag football,” Miller said.
