COVINGTON – Arcanum’s comeback attempt fell short as the Lady Trojans lost 42-39 to Covington in a Cross County Conference girls basketball game on Tuesday.
Covington got on a roll and did not miss many baskets late in the opening period so by the end of the first quarter the Buccs had a seven-point lead with a score of 12-5.
During the second quarter fouls, turnovers and missed baskets really hurt Arcanum. The Trojans only scored four points in the quarter while the Buccs scored 13 points, taking the game into halftime with a score of 25-9.
However, after halftime the game turned around and Arcanum came out looking good. The Trojans held the Buccs to a single point the entire quarter as Lexie Long hit one free throw with 2:37 left on the clock.
Arcanum, meanwhile, scored 12 this quarter to pull within five points at 26-21.
During the fourth quarter Covington scored first with seven minutes left on the clock, and the Buccs started to run away with the game and had a 13-point lead.
The Trojans had Gracie Garno foul out and the Buccs had Jordan Crowell foul out.
Arcanum started to come back at the last part of this quarter, however, there was not enough time to catch up. The game ended with the Buccs winning 42-39.
Stevie Johnting led Arcanum with 17 points in the game. Also for the Trojans, Gracie Garno scored seven points, Kaitlyn Zell scored three, Kayla O’Daniel scored three, McKenzie Sharritts scored three, Brittany Kinney scored three, and Madi O’Daniel scored one.
Covington’s Samantha Whitman led all players with 21 points. Also for the Buccs, Lexie Long scored eight points, Jordan Crowell scored six, Lauren Christian scored five, and Tori Lyle scored two points.
Covington improved to 5-1 with the win while Arcanum fell to 2-3.
Arcanum won the junior varsity game 35-32.
