Franklin Monroe boys basketball team defeats Covington in Homecoming game

PITSBURG – The Franklin Monroe boys basketball team won its Homecoming game Friday night, defeating Cross County Conference foe Covington 54-47.

Led by seven points each from Ethan Conley and Mason Conley, Franklin Monroe took a 20-10 lead in the first quarter.

Covington outscored Franklin Monroe 12-8 in the second quarter to cut the Jets’ lead to 28-22 by halftime. Mason Conley and Zach Cable both scored three points for FM in the period while Jayce Pond helped guide Covington’s strong run with eight points in the quarter.

The third quarter was back and forth, but Franklin Monroe was able to maintain a one-point lead at 32-33 with five points from Mason Conley helping to keep the Buccaneers at bay.

Parker Hesler hit a shot early in the fourth quarter that helped Franklin Monroe get rolling and increase its lead to 11 points with 4:33 left to play. However, the Buccaneers brought the game back within four with 1:12 left.

Covington started fouling Franklin Monroe, and the Jets made their free throws down the stretch to preserve the 54-47 victory.

Mason Conley scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. Also for the Jets, Ethan Conley scored 12 points, Kyle Ressler scored eight, Parker Hesler scored five, Zach Cable scored three, and Kameron Thurmond scored two.

Trevor Miller and Pond led Covington with 11 points each. Also for the Buccs, Jett Murphy scored 10 points, Kenny Atkinson scored five, Nathan Blei scored five, Tristin Sowers scored three, and Zach Parrett scored two.
