VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers were the opening act of Wednesday night’s doubleheader at Versailles High School.

They put their unblemished 9-0 record on the line versus the Anna Lady Rockets from the Shelby County League. Versailles placed three girls in double figures, led by Kami McEldowney’s 22, to outlast Anna 62-46.

The Lady Tigers got out of the gate quickly as they opened a 12-2 advantage on the Lady Rockets in the game’s first 2:30. The Lady Rockets regrouped and managed to draw within four at 14-10 after a 3-point play by sophomore Taylor Kauffman. Just as quickly Versailles launched a 9-0 assault to end the period to take a 23-10 lead into the second quarter, which was highlighted by McEldowney’s 11 points in the stanza.

Anna once again cut into the deficit as the Rockets closed to within six at 23-17 before the Lady Tigers struck back. Versailles went on a 14-2 run sparked by transition baskets created simply by beating the Lady Rockets back down the floor for easy opportunities. This rally enabled Versailles to enjoy a 39-23 advantage at the intermission.

The Lady Tigers were in control during the second half. The third quarter saw them maintain a lead of 17-21 points. Anna cut into the lead during the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 12 at 58-46 with 4:02 remaining, but the Rockets would get no closer.

A win is a win and Coach Jacki Stonebraker said, “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it.”

Concerning her players, Stonebraker said, “Kami McEldwoney had a quiet 22 … thought she played the whole floor not just the offensive end. Other kids stepped up. Liz Ording had a nice game in the post. They’re bigger, and she was able to rebound and score above them.

“Still a work in progress … defensively we have a lot of breakdowns,” Stonebraker said of her team this far into the season. “We go get them for the first four or five minutes then we sag off … Offensively, sometimes we struggle running our half-court sets. Happy about our full-court game, pressing and how we run the court.”

McEldowney was joined in double-digit scoring for Versailles by the post duo of Liz Ording and Danielle Winner who each had 10 points. Macey Huelskamp paced Anna with 10.

The Lady Tigers are now 10-0 and face Fort Loramie on the road Thursday evening.
