Mississinawa Valley escapes Arcanum boys basketball team in Jet Holiday Tournament

PITSBURG – The Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks hit a barrage of points in the fourth quarter to spoil Arcanum’s upset bid, 42-40, in the consolation game of the Jet Holiday Tournament Friday night.

The game turned on its axis when the Blackhawks swooped in 17 points to only 9 for the Trojans in a furious fourth quarter comeback victory to improve to 3-5 for the year. The Blackhawks’ 17 points in the fourth were 2 more than they scored in the entire first half of action at the Hangar.

The loss dropped the Trojans to 0-7 for the year, but they did show balanced scoring for Coach Marcus Bixler, who had seven players score and played aggressive all night on offense and defense.

The first quarter saw Mississinawa Valley and Arcanum searching for points as it wound up 6-4 in favor of the Union City squad. Mississinawa Valley was led by freshman Cody Dirksen with 4 and senior Andrew Johns with 2 Arcanum was led by sophomore Evan Atchley with 2 points and senior Devin Burns with 2.

The second quarter action saw Arcanum hitting a dozen points while limiting Mississinawa Valley to 9 points for a 1-point advantage at 16-15. Arcanum was led by freshman Carter Gray with 6 points followed by Burns with 3 and sophomore Wade Meeks with 3. Mississinawa Valley was led in scoring by junior Ethan Bowman with 5 followed by Trenton Perkins and Dirksen with 2 each.

The third canto saw Arcanum burning up the nets for 16 points with Burns leading the way with 5 followed closely by Atchley with 4 and Gray and junior Andrew Baker with 3 apiece. Mississinawa Valley had Bowman leading the charges with 4 followed by Perkins, Johns and junior Matt Slob with 2 apiece.

Fourth quarter fireworks showcased Mississinawa Valley’s Blackhawks blackening the scoreboard with 17 points.

Showcasing Perkins led the charge with 11 points with a 3-pointer, three twos and two free throws. Senior JJ Howard, who hadn’t scored all game, blasted in 6 points for the high-flying Hawks.

Arcanum saw Brandon Kinney with 3 points, Gray 2 and senior Maverick Hildebrand brandishing the net for 2 points.

Arcanum was only 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the final eight minutes, which hurt the Trojans in this close encounter.

Gray led the Trojans with 11 points, Burns 10, Atchley 6, Meeks 5, Kinney 3, Baker 3 and Hildebrand with 2.

Mississinawa Valley was led by all-tourney selection Perkins with 15 points, Bowman 9, Howell 6, Dirksen 6, Johns 4 and Slob with 2.
