Ansonia boys basketball team beats Mississinawa Valley

ANSONIA – Ansonia beat rival Mississinawa Valley 61-37 in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday night.

Mississinawa Valley took the first lead of the game with a 3-pointer by Trenton Perkins. The Blackhawks led by as many as 5 points before Ansonia got going with a Brayden Swabb 3-pointer. Following a steal Swabb drained another 3-pointer, and Ansonia was up by 1 point.

From there the teams traded the lead with Mississinawa Valley’s Andrew Johns making a pair of free throws to put the Blackhawks back on top. With less than a minute remaining in the quarter Ansonia regained the lead with three free throws by Devyn Sink. By the end of the period Ansonia had a 15-11 lead.

Ansonia increased its lead to 7 points early in the second quarter before Mississinawa Valley battled back to pull within 3 midway through the period. By the end of the half Ansonia had built its lead back up to 8 points, 28-20.

In the third quarter Mississinawa Valley again pulled within striking distance, making it just a 4-point game. But like before Ansonia responded, and this time went up by 16 points by the end of the period for a 43-27 Tiger lead.

Ansonia upped its lead to 20 points early in the fourth quarter before MV decreased its deficit to 12 points midway through the frame. However, Ansonia once again went on a strong run and closed out the 61-37 victory.

Sink led Ansonia with a game-high 20 points, Swabb scored 14 points, Hunter Muir scored 10, Trevor Alexander scored 7, Aydan Sanders scored 5, Kane Kimmel scored 3, and Matthew Farrier scored 2.

Johns led Mississinawa Valley with 10 points, Ethan Bowman scored 6, DJ Howell scored 5, Perkins scored 5, Darin Miller scored 4, Blake Scholl scored 3, Matt Slob scored 3, and Kyler Guillozet scored 1.

Ansonia improved to 9-8 with Saturday’s win. Mississinawa Valley dropped to 5-10. The Tigers will host Covington Friday night, and the Blackhawks will host Tri-County North Friday.
