Versailles boys basketball team completes perfect MAC season by beating Coldwater

VERSAILLES – For just the second time the Versailles boys basketball team completed a perfect Midwest Athletic Conference season as the Tigers beat Coldwater 70-56 on Friday.

Versailles led 19-15 through one quarter and 35-28 at halftime. Coldwater pulled to within 48-44 in the third quarter, but the Tigers outscored the Cavaliers by 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 70-56 win.

Justin Ahrens led Versailles with a double-double, scoring a game-high 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Also for the Tigers, Alex Wendel scored 14 points, Keaton McEldowney scored 10, Connor Custenborder scored 8, AJ Ahrens scored 5, Austin Knapke scored 3, and Noah Richard scored 3.

Dylan Thobe led Coldwater with 22 points. Also for the Cavaliers, Jacob Wenning scored 8 points, Sam Broering scored 7, Neal Muhlenkamp scored 7, Derek Albers scored 6, Marcus Bruns scored 4, and Cole Frilling scored 2.

Coldwater fell to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the MAC while Versailles improved to 20-1 overall and 9-0 in the MAC.

The MAC title is Versailles’ second in a row and fourth overall since joining the conference during the 2001-02 season. It’s the second time Versailles has finished undefeated in the MAC and first time since the 2003-04 season when the Tigers went 27-1 overall and finished as the Division III state runner up.
