Ansonia, Mississinawa Valley baseball teams split doubleheader

UNION CITY – The Ansonia and Mississinawa Valley baseball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday in Union City.

Mississinawa Valley won the first game, which was a Cross County Conference contest, 3-2 with a walk-off single by Zac Longfellow in the eighth inning.

Mississinawa Valley took an early lead with one run in the bottom half of the first inning and increased its advantage to 2-0 with a run in the third inning. Ansonia forced extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh, but MV scored the winning run in the eighth.

Ansonia out-hit Mississinawa Valley five to three in the game. Both teams committed one error.

Trent Collins went 1-for-1 with a double, three walks, three stolen bases and two runs, including the game winner, for Mississinawa Valley. Longfellow was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Ethan Dirksen was 1-for-3, and Casey Rust scored a run.

For Ansonia Trevor Beam went 1-for-3 with a triple and drove in a run. Caleb Jones was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Rygh Fortkamp was 1-for-4 with a stolen base. Lane Clark and Kane Kimmel also had hits while Aric Barga scored a run.

Collins earned the win for Mississinawa Valley as he pitched the complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Fortkamp was the losing pitcher for Ansonia as he allowed one earned run on two hits. Kimmel pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit, six walks and seven strikeouts.

In game two, a non-league contest, Ansonia won 4-1.

Mississinawa Valley struck first with a run in the bottom of the first but didn’t score again. Ansonia tied the game in the third inning and scored three runs in the fifth to win 4-1.

Ansonia had four hits and one error while Mississinawa Valley had six hits and two errors.

Clark was 1-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two runs for Ansonia. Josh Heitkamp went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Fortkamp was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run. Barga walked twice and scored a run.

Max Dirmeyer and Damon McGee both went 1-for-1 for Mississinawa. Collins was 1-for-3 and scored a run. Longfellow was 1-for-3 and drove in a run. Dirksen and Andrew Johns also had hits.

Clark earned the win for Ansonia as he pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Ethan Fischer earned the save by pitching one inning and allowing no runs on one hit.

Johns was charged with the loss for Mississinawa Valley as he allowed two unearned runs on two hits, one walk and one strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. Cameron Shimp pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits, four walks and seven strikeouts.
