Greenville football team takes on powerhouse Coldwater

COLDWATER – After taking on state powerhouse Coldwater on Friday, Greenville football coach Aaron Shaffer left the field feeling good about how his team matched up with the Cavaliers.

Greenville went into Friday’s scrimmage with Coldwater – who has played in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state finals in each of the past eight seasons – looking to match the Cavaliers’ tempo, physicality and knowledge. In all three areas, Shaffer said, he thought the Green Wave came through.

“Just off the field, it felt like we had that today,” he said. “We had some energy in a scrimmage, which we’ve not had. I was pleased with what I saw for the most part. Obviously it’s the second scrimmage, the second week of two-a-days, you’re still trying to figure out who’s going to be in there and things so it was a good day.”

The teams’ varsity, junior varsity and freshmen squads all saw action in Friday’s match up, which last approximately two hours. The scrimmage included both teams getting 10-play offensive series to begin the day then they worked on goal line situations, special teams and concluded the activities with down-and-distance series like the ones used in real games.

Coldwater ultimately outscored Greenville through the day, but the Green Wave were able to move the ball, especially early on.

“Some of our strengths are going to be out on the edge, on the perimeter with our athletes whether it’s backs out of the backfield or getting it on the edge to our receivers, but, yeah, I thought for the most part that first drive was pretty nice getting down field,” Shaffer said. “The second one wasn’t bad. We had the turnover and had to restart so obviously you don’t want turnovers, but that’s all stuff that our young quarterbacks can learn from.”

During three down-and-distance series with the varsity teams, Greenville limited Coldwater to a single touchdown. The Wave also forced a turnover on downs and a fumble.

“Coldwater typically doesn’t turn the ball over,” Shaffer said. “That was one of the things we talked yesterday when we go into the scrimmage there. They’re always fundamentally sound. They don’t turn the ball over. It was nice to see us get the ball out a few times.”

With two weeks to go before the regular season starts, Shaffer said he’s starting to see some players emerge as varsity-caliber guys. The Wave will look for more of that progress and will seek to continue their momentum in the final days of the preseason.

“We’re really young so right now we’re trying to get through that wide-eyed, flat-footed stage where they can just go out and play the game that they’ve played since they were little kids,” Shaffer said. “But, yeah, through these first two scrimmages from Tuesday to Friday we made some steps and some guys are starting to separate themselves from the rest of them. So, yeah, we’re starting to find those guys, and we’ve still got another week to figure that out before we really have to know.”
