Versailles volleyball team sweeps Parkway for its 1st MAC win

VERSAILLES – Versailles earned its first Midwest Athletic Conference win of the season on Thursday, sweeping Parkway 25-7, 25-12, 25-12.

Elizabeth Ording and Danielle Winner finished the night with 14 kills each as Versailles played aggressive throughout Thursday’s match.

“We knew coming in that we wanted to have a really aggressive attacking night so we definitely had a lot of attempts,” Versailles volleyball coach Kenzie Bruggeman said. “The first game was what I expected them to do – go out, command every time we had a chance to get a kill. The second and third games at some points we did. It wasn’t as clean and as fluid as I would have liked it, but we never let them get back into the game. It was only a couple runs at a time so I’ll take it.”

Versailles was in control throughout the match, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead in the opening set. Parkway never got any closer in the first game as Versailles comfortably won 25-7.

Versailles’ dominance continued in the early portions of the second set with the Tigers cruising to a 15-2 advantage.

Parkway was able to recover and scored eight of the next 12 points to reduce its deficit to single digits at 19-10. That was as close as the Panthers got, however, as Versailles regrouped and closed out the 25-12 victory to go up two sets to none.

“It doesn’t concern me too much,” Bruggeman said of Parkway’s run. “It wasn’t to the point where they came all the way back into it. We were able to end it and then get back on our run and finish with a nice lead, which is what I definitely wanted. But as long as we’re going out and being the aggressor and taking control rather than being on the receptive side I’m happy.”

In the third set Versailles again was in control as the Tigers got another 25-12 victory to complete the sweep.

With Thursday’s win Versailles improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC this season. The Tigers are on a three-match winning streak having also recorded victories against Fort Loramie and Bishop Fenwick.

Versailles will return to action on Monday at Celina.
