VERSAILLES – The Anna Rockets came to Versailles Friday night averaging 50.5 points a game. They exceeded their average by putting up 52 against the Tigers.

“Anna is a very good team,” Versailles football coach Adam Miller said. “A little disappointed we didn’t play with them more.”

The Tigers struggled to stop the potent Rocket offense, allowing 463 yards of offense.

Anna took a 7-0 lead on its first possession with a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Rockets forced a fumble on the Tigers’ next possession and took a 10-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal.

Ian Hiestand pulled the Tigers to within three with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Noah Waymire with over three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Rockets then took a 24-10 lead on two touchdown runs in the second quarter.

The Tigers closed the gap on a 77-yard screen pass to George Grow with 49 seconds left in the first half.

With the lead down to 10 and the Tigers receiving the second half kickoff, the game was still in reach. The Rockets were not satisfied with a 14-point half time lead, though, and scored on a 49-yard pass with 24.4 seconds left in the half.

Versailles would shank a punt early in the third and give the Rockets the ball on the Tiger 39-yard line. The Rockets scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with nine minutes left in the third quarter.

The Tigers would not go away, though, and scored with five minutes left in the third. Down 38-20, the Tigers went for two but failed to convert.

The 18-point deficit was as close as the Tigers would get as the Rockets scored two more times. The Rockets scored with seconds left in the third, allowing for a running clock in the fourth quarter. Anna closed out the scoring with a 29-yard run with 8:49 left in the game.

Versailles travels back to Delphos next week to take on Delphos St. John’s. The Blue Jays bring a 2-1 record into the game. St. John’s lost 41-14 to Minster Friday night. The Blue Jays are averaging 31 points a game through three games.
