Darke County girls qualify for regional cross country meet

CEDARVILLE – The Versailles girls along with Ansonia’s Olivia Wright, Arcanum’s Mara Wetzel and Bradford’s Karmen Knepp all qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association regional cross country meet.

Runners from Ansonia, Arcanum, Bradford, Franklin Monroe, Mississinawa Valley, Tri-Village and Versailles all competed in the Division III girls district cross country meet on Saturday at Cedarville.

The Versailles girls finished third in the team standings behind West Liberty-Salem and Fort Loramie. The Tigers qualified for regionals as a team along with West Liberty-Salem, Fort Loramie, Covington, Russia, National Trail, Botkins and Springfield Catholic Central.

Franklin Monroe’s girls finished just one spot out of regional-qualification position, finishing ninth out of 23 teams. Ansonia finished 13th, and Arcanum finished 17th. Bradford, Mississinawa Valley and Tri-Village didn’t have enough runners to record team scores.

Senior Kenia McEldowney led Versailles by finishing 19th overall in 20:35.31. Also for the Lady Tigers, senior Megan Rismiller finished 23rd in 20:48.91, freshman Maria Mangen finished 28th in 20:55.13, senior Dana Rose finished 35th in 21:25.44, freshman Kennedy McEldowney finished 36th in 21:25.98, junior Liz Watren finished 50th in 21:56.68, and sophomore Emma Peters finished 61st in 22:20.35.

Sophomore Selene Weaver led Franklin Monroe by finishing 51st overall in 21:58.56. Also for the Lady Jets, freshman Raegan Warner finished 59th in 22:15.66, junior Nicole Brocious finished 67th in 22:34.15, sophomore Audrey Cable finished 68th in 22:36.38, and senior Danielle McVey finished 78th in 23:14.84.

Wright, a sophomore, led Ansonia’s girls by finishing 30th overall in 20:55.95 and qualified for the regional meet as an individual. Also for the Lady Tigers, freshman Mariah Troutwine finished 72nd in 22:55.57, freshman Lydia Snyder finished 85th in 23:30.77, senior Katie Werts finished 107th in 24:31.05, freshman Kassie Weyant finished 110th in 24:37.77, freshman Breena Hall finished 114th in 24:47.22, and senior Amber Bergman finished 128th in 25:57.38.

Wetzel, a senior, led Arcanum by finishing 32nd overall in 21:06.27, becoming the final girl to qualify for regionals as an individual. Also for the Lady Trojans, freshman Aidan O’Brien finished 90th overall in 23:46.26, sophomore Kayla O’Daniel finished 125th in 25:50.85, senior Paige Kreusch finished 127th in 25:56.85, sophomore Abbigail VanHoose finished 144th in 26:53.50, senior Lana Johnson finished 153rd in 27:58.71, and junior Mekenna Gunckel finished 170th in 32:06.94.

Knepp, a junior, led Bradford as she finished third overall in 19:14.44 and qualified for the regional meet. Also for the Lady Railroaders, sophomore Mercedes Smith finished 63rd overall in 22:24.70, and senior Chelsea Gill finished 122nd in 25:19.11.

Freshman Maria Ojeda led Mississinawa Valley by finishing 160th overall in 29:04.52. Also for the Lady Hawks, freshman Gabby Rammel finished 162nd in 29:12.52, junior Casey Carrico finished 172nd in 32:25.24, and senior Piper Phillips finished 175th in 33:59.07.

Sophomore Lissa Siler, the lone girl to run for Tri-Village, finished 139th in 26:41.09.

West Liberty-Salem freshman Katelyn Stapleton won the Division III girls race, which included 177 runners, with a time of 18:48.57.

Knepp, Wetzel, Wright and the Versailles girls now will compete in the OHSAA regional meet on Saturday in Troy. The Division III girls race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
