Coakley contends for Wendy’s High School Heisman

GREENVILLE – Greenville’s Grace Coakley, a track and field and cross country runner for the Lady Wave, was named a state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman.

Coakley was selected as a finalist for the award for her excellence and integrity in and out of competition. The Greenville senior is fifth in her class with a 4.062 GPA.

She’s the vice president of Greenville’s National Honor Society, the Key Club secretary, We are the Majority leader, senior class representative of the SADD Club, a member of the Spanish Club, part of the Student Athlete Leadership Council and a four-year scholar athlete.

Coakley is a four-year member of the Greenville varsity cross country team and was a team captain for three years. She’s a three-year member of the varsity track and field team and has been a captain for two years. She was named second team all-Greater Western Ohio Conference in 2016 and 2017 for cross country and earned the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award in 2017 as a junior.

Along with Coakley, Ansonia’s Bailey Stammen and Versailles’ Danielle Winner were winners for their schools. Each school winner receives certificate and Wendy’s High School Heisman patch.

As a state finalist, Coakley earned a bronze medal, a Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalist patch and a $25 Wendy’s gift card.

The other High School Heisman finalists in Ohio were Bethel’s Korry Hamlin, Clear Fork’s Macy Wade, Cuyahoga Heights’ Lisa Tangri, Eaton’s Sarah Willis, Fairfield’s Matthew Mangus, Gallia Academy’s Grace Martin, Girard Senior’s Sarah Ryser, Lima Central Catholic’s Emily Sreenan, Lima Shawnee’s Isaac Hanover, Mansfield Senior’s Thomas Shandon Kiah, Milton-Union’s Abigail Hissong, Ottawa-Glandorf’s Jay Kaufman, Ottoville’s Brendan Siefker, Riverside’s Caleb Stevens, Solon’s Hailey Erkkila, St Joseph Central’s Clay Willis, Vinton County’s Naylan Yates, Wellsville’s Ryan Miller and Wheelersburg’s Ellie Ruby.

Ryser from Girard Senior and Siefker from Ottoville were selected as Ohio’s winners. From the state winners, the field was narrowed to 10 national finalists and then one boy and one girl will be honored as national winners of the Wendy’s High School Heisman.

Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust have honored student-athletes as part of the High School Heisman since 1994. The program, which was created by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, has honored more than 600,000 high school seniors since the program began more than 20 years ago.

In 2012 then-Versailles senior Samuel Prakel was named a national winner of the High School Heisman.
