Covington stifles Arcanum

ARCANUM – For the second time in consecutive days, the Arcanum Trojans and Covington Buccaneers were on the field ready to lock horns in a critical Cross County Conference battle.

That’s because the thunderstorms that passed through the area on Friday night forced the game to be moved to Saturday.

And when the two teams were ready to take the field on Saturday, dark clouds slowly rolled through once again on what was a hot, humid night – forcing yet another delay to the action that was scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Fortunately, after scaling down the pre-game warmup to 30 minutes, the Buccaneers and Trojans finally got the game under way at 6:45pm.

And the Trojans wasted little time putting the first points on the board as senior quarterback Daniel O’Donnell took what appeared to be broken play 65 yards to the house on the first offensive snap of the game.

But O’Donnell’s run would be the final highlight for Arcanum as Covington established the line of scrimmage on the ensuing possession. Starting at their own 18, the Buccs put together a 15-play, 81-yard drive that took nearly 9:00 off the clock – a drive capped with a 2-yard scoring plunge by Ethan Herron and the point-after by Nathan Blei for a 7-6 lead.

From there, Covington scored three more times before the half. Ethan Herron broke loose on a 51-yard run followed by the 3-yard scoring plunge by Lance Miller following an interception by Noah Thomas.

Herron then capped the half with a 7-yard scoring run.

Trailing 28-6 to start the second half, Arcanum desperately needed a stop.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, Covington was able to convert on a fourth-and-2 and eat up 7:00 of the clock on a 12-play scoring drive. Herron capped the effort with a 9-yard run to push the Covington lead to 35-6.

Arcanum responded with a drive of its own behind the throwing arm of O’Donnell. Unfortunately the drive stalled on a failed fourth-and-6attempt at the Buccaneer 14.

From there Covington put together a nine-play drive before the Arcanum defense stiffened to force a punt. Still, the drive was enough for Covington to eat up enough clock to preserve the 35-6 win.

Arcanum finished with seven first downs and 168 yards of offense, 108 on the ground and 60 through the air.

Covington had 35 minutes of time of possession and chewed with 375 yards on the ground and 25 first downs.

Arcanum drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Cross County Conference and looks to rebound on Friday at Tri-County North.
